PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES AND SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
Students in the athletic training program are regularly encouraged to participate in professional development and extracurricular activities at the local, state, and national level. This includes a range of involvement in community service, attendance at conferences, and other professional development activities during enrollment in the program.
Conferences and Educational Opportunities
Attendance at professional conferences and workshops is strongly recommended. Students engaged in research projects under the guidance of faculty are mentored to submit and present their work at athletic training and sports medicine conferences at the state, regional, and national level including:
- National Athletic Trainers’ Association Annual Meeting & AT Expo
- Eastern athletic Trainers’ Association Annual Meeting & Clinical Symposia
- Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society Annual Meeting & Clinical Symposium
Other Professional Activities
- Attending a Good Morning America live taping in New York City during National Athletic Training Month.
- Advocating for the athletic training profession and meeting with legislators during Capitol Hill Day in Washington, DC.
- Attending various guest lectures by professionals invited to present on campus throughout each semester.
- Short-term study abroad trips to Europe (Ireland, Spain, England) during Winter and Spring Break. These experiences provide students with cultural aspects of each country that focus on sports medicine and injury prevention, as well as the uniqueness of each country.
Community Service
Active engagement in service within the Neumann and surrounding community is an important tradition for our students. Previous activities have included:
- Volunteering at the Philadelphia Marathon
- Assisting with rehabilitative and cognitive exercises at the Assisi Retirement House on Neumann’s Campus
- Facilitating games and activities with patients at A.I. DuPont Hospital
Additionally, students are responsible for designing their own service project that integrates the athletic training profession. Recent student projects have included:
- Helping the homeless population prevent heat and cold illnesses
- Presenting inexpensive health food choices to low-income communities
- Educating youth hockey players and parents on concussions
