Online Course Facilitation and Design
The Online Course Facilitation and Design Program applies principles of facilitation and instructional design to online education. The eight-week program introduces participants to teaching in the online environment and helps participants enhance and build skills for the online classroom. The program can help participants develop and build facilitation skills, identify strategies in teaching virtual learners, and apply knowledge and skill to a real-world course or program of their own design.
In an increasingly high-tech world filled with online learning initiatives, the program builds awareness,
knowledge and skills that prove helpful for those in business and education, especially for
those seeking a career change or to enhance their current professional endeavors.
Topics include
but are not limited to:
• Introduction to the Online Environment and Tools for Online Interaction;
• Building Online Communities;
• Tools for Collecting and Grading Written Work;
• Challenges and Issues for Online Facilitators;
• Managing the Online Environment;
• Developing Online Materials and Media; and
• Evaluation and Peer Review.
Audience: The Online Course Facilitation and Design program is a professional development program designed for teachers and professional trainers and for those aspiring to teach or facilitate in an online environment. The technology has applications for varying levels of education as well as for training and development initiatives in business environments. Technologies used in the course include NU Learn (Blackboard Learn), Wimba collaboration tools, and Turnitin.
Requirements: Participants should have proficiency in the use of technology. Teaching and
learning platforms will be introduced and utilized; however, specific software knowledge is not
necessary. Participants should also be prepared for active participation and engagement in
assignments and work. Neumann University distance learning courses use the NU Learn (Blackboard Learn) learning system. Most computers manufactured in the last 4-5 years, running Windows XP,
Windows Vista or Mac OS X will be fine. For a list of supported browsers, see:

taking online courses should also have access to a broadband connection to the Internet (such
as DSL, Comcast, FIOS).
Program: The program consists of one two-hour in-person introduction at Neumann University followed by an eight-week fully-online, interactive course during
which participants should expect to spend at least two hours per week. Work in the course will
include readings, online audio conferences, and production of components that can be used in
actual online teaching and facilitation.

Online Class 8 weeks: June 9 – July 31, 2013
Fee: $359 per person. This fee includes costs for instruction, course materials, headsets, and related texts and readings. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate of completion from Neumann University.
