NBA, NHL Referees to Speak on Campus

Joe Crawford and Kerry Fraser, two of the most experienced referees in professional sports, will speak to students on September 13 in the Meagher Theatre. The program, entitled "Hey Ref, What Are You Thinking?" will run from 9:40 to 11:10 a.m.

Crawford, who went to Cardinal O'Hara High School and has a degree from Neumann University, has been a National Basketball Association (NBA) referee for 35 years. He has worked nearly 2,500 NBA games, including more playoff and finals games than any of his active colleagues. Known as a strict official, he is famous for calling technical fouls on some of the biggest stars in the game.

He comes from a family of sports referees. His late father, Shag, and his brother, Jerry, were Major League Baseball umpires for many years.

Fraser is a hockey analyst and former senior referee for the National Hockey League (NHL). During a 30-year career, which began in 1980, he called more than 1,900 regular season games and more than 260 Stanley Cup playoff games. He was selected to referee 12 Stanley Cup Finals, the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, and the 1998 Winter Olympics.

He was voted the best referee in the NHL by players, and Referee magazine selected him as as one of the top ten officials of the 20th century in any sport.

The program is co-sponsored by the University's Institute for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development and the Sport and Entertainment Management program. Faculty members will ask both men about life as a sports official, stories from their days on the court and ice, and the role of faith in their careers.
