During spring break, 11 students and two chaperones traveled to the Big Easy, New Orleans, to work on several homes affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The group, sponsored by Catholic Charities, learned to plant trees and landscape, and spent a lot of time painting and working on roofing needs.
Highlights of the trip were meeting actress Whoopi Goldberg at a local restaurant, hearing great Dixieland jazz music, and sampling the famous beignets at Café Du Monde in Jackson Square. This trip was Neumann’s fifth to the New Orleans area where students and staff have worked on more than 15 homes.
The students who attended are Daniel Glassman, Bryan Defoney, Caitlin Lotty, Kathleen Paulson, Bill Hickey, Jennifer Yacobacci, Erin O’Shea, Hilary Shee, Manuel Rodriguez, Laura Fanelli and Brittany Schafferman. The chaperones are Melissa Hickey, director of Campus Ministry, and Roland Whiting, building coordinator in Residence Life and coach of the cross country team.
